On September 21st- 23rd, Fall Equinox and the United Nations International Day of Peace, studios, teachers and organizations across the globe will create fundraising celebrations, raising funds and awareness for the most essential issues of our times; environmental, health and human rights issues.
This worldwide event is called the Global Mala Project www.globalmala.org.
Samui will join in this global fun, food and fundraising get-together and align ourselves as a positive force for change.
why yoga?
Health is not just about our bodies, but should be expressed in our whole environment, in our community and on our planet.
who are we?
Committee members consist of individuals from yoga studios, spas, organizations, resorts and people who just live on Samui who care about the environment and sustainability. However this is an inclusive non-profit event. Anyone can help. You don’t even have to be able to touch your toes to be part of the fun!
why come together?
We aim to bring the local community together start to make a positive change in Koh Samui. We will have information on environmental issues and fun information and activities for children.
We will raise funds - all proceeds from the day will go to worthwhile selected local environmental organisations. We are particularly focusing on educational programs for schools to pinpoint some specific local goals that are achievable and beneficial to Samui. (watch this space!). We want to have helpful information to present to the community about how they can help as individuals in their daily life – what they buy, how they recycle, how they dispose of their garbage.
We are talking to the local Tessabaan (council) about specific waste disposal problems. We are engaging as many local businesses, associations and clubs as we can – whoever is active in this field…
We want this to be a day of hope. There promises to be lots of fun with special performances including dance, drumming, kirtan, sacred sound, live bands & DJs. There will be classes and demonstrations in yoga, chi gung, meditation plus a wonderful selection of different styles of massage and alternative therapies. Exhibitions by local artists and designers. Crafts fair. Kid's activites. Educational workshops.
Plus how to be kind to animals (and yourselves) by offering a wide selection of delicious vegetarian food!
why the environment?
Living on an island like Samui, we are a tiny microcosm of what is happening to our planet.
What we throw in the sea will wash up on our beaches, and what we spray on our fruit trees will land up in our wells and on our reefs.
We can sit back and ignore it or we can say we are too busy right now. But it won't go away until we take action.
